NSF Update: NSF ID Numbers replacing Use of SSNs

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is taking pro-active steps to protect its customers' personally identifiable information and reduce the use of Social Security Numbers (SSNs). In this regard, please note the changes below that are being implemented by NSF.

Fastlane users registered after Fall 2007 will see no change in light of this announcement. All users registered in the Fastlane system were automatically assigned a NSF ID and now use this number when logging in to the system.

Fastlane users registered before Fall 2007 will automatically be assigned a NSF ID when logging in to the Fastlane system on or afterDecember 15, 2007. While you will have the option to use your SSN to login for a limited time, OSP recommends using your NSF ID immediately in order to protect this sensitive information. Additionally, when assisting faculty with NSF proposals, OSP staff will use the NSF ID when accessing NSF Fastlane proposals.

If you have misplaced your NSF ID, you may retrieve it by clicking on the 'NSF ID lookup' link in the login box on the Fastlane homepage. You may also contact your appropriate OSP development staff for assistance in retrieving your NSF ID and for questions regarding this notice. If you are unsure who your development staff is, please visit Faculty/Staff.
