On January 11, 2008, the National Institutes of Health announced a major policy change regarding the deposition of NIH-funded research results. Effective April 7, 2008, a copy of all final, peer-reviewed manuscripts resulting from an NIH-funded project must be deposited in PubMed Central within 12 months of the paper's official date of publication, even if the NIH grant that funded the research has been completed. In some cases, journals will automatically submit articles to PubMed, but not all journals do so. Submission to PubMed is currently voluntary.
Investigators will be responsible for ensuring that they have complied with all applicable copyright and publishing policies when submitting articles to PubMed Central. NIH will not pay any author fees or page charges for making the full text of submitted articles available for deposition.
Additionally, beginning May 25, 2008, anyone submitting an application, proposal or progress report to the NIH must include the PMC or NIH Manuscript Submission reference number when citing applicable articles that arise from their NIH funded research (in grant applications or progress reports, for example). This policy includes applications submitted to the NIH for the May 25, 2008 due date and subsequent due dates.
